A few of the new features include:

  • Permalink in text editor is a real link
  • all images are fully responsive
  • embed post from another site into your post
  • comment form layout
  • half of the REST API in the core

A few things to watch out for:

Images

It’s now more important than ever to ensure that you are properly optimizing your images PRIOR to uploading them. Those image smushing plugins just don’t cut it.

Comments

If you use a comment plugin of any type, ensure that it is 4.4 compatible prior to upgrading your site.

Post oEmbed

If you use a plugin to do this now, don’t delete it until you are sure this new feature works in a way that you like first. Just deactivate, give the new oEmbed a try. Be sure to check your site on multiple browsers. If all is good, then delete your plugin if you like. You may have to go back and fix all of your old posts, though.

    1. WP.com does the updates for you. But the software is the same on both. However, the user interface on WP.com is different now due to the addition of Calypso. It’s available to .org users via JetPack, but I don’t know many folks who are using it yet. I mainly only cover self-hosted WordPress because .com is just too restrictive for most biz owners.
